This is a really late post, but nonetheless, better late than never! Plus it is a post truly worth writing and reading about.
I am honored to share with you an inspiring story about two Filipina women who made a name for themselves in the UK cake scene, through their hard work, talent, perseverance and passion. Their journey is really one that makes you want to do more and to feel proud to be a Filipino.
I came to know about Valerie and Christina through their first published book entitled “ The Contemporary Buttercream Bible”. I came across this book while browsing through cake decorating books in Fullybooked. I was leafing through the book, amazed at the wonderful creations and thought that I could try my hand at buttercream. I bought the book, not knowing that at the end was a great and wonderful surprise of getting to know the wonderful authors. When I got home, I started reading and I got hooked! I read each page, excited to know the next project as I went along. I got to read the book from cover to cover that first night!! As I neared the end, there was a page about the authors. Imagine how pleasantly surprised I was to find out that the ladies behind the amazing creations in the book were Filipinas!!!! I was super duper excited that I emailed them right away! I just expressed my happiness and the pride that I felt in knowing they were my fellow country men. I congratulated them and told them how inspired I was with their work and story. Then imagine my surprise once again when they answered back, thanking me for my email, and telling me that they had a workshop scheduled here in the Philippines!!!!!!!!! Waaaahhhhhhh!!!!!! As you have guessed, the rest is history.
Here is a short excerpt that I lifted from their book to share the story and journey of Valeri and Christina:
“ Valeri Valeriano and Christina Ong left the Philippines in 2008 to work in the U.K in the medical field. After the sweet accident of learning how to make cupcake bouquets in 2011, they launched their business Queen of Hearts Couture Cakes. They have since won several top awards in various prestigious cake competitions.
Now renowned globally for their edible works of art, using nothing else but buttercream as their decorating medium, Valeri and Christina have been featured in various well known magazines and on local and international news. They have appeared on television and showcased their masterpieces and demonstrated their craft in major cake shows in the U.K. and abroad. They hold masterclasses in the UK, Europe, Asia and the US and have also held a couple of masterclasses at the famous Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Valeri and Christina take immense pride in their mastery of buttercream art and this makes Queen of Hearts Couture Cakes exclusive. They have modernized what is commonly known as the age-old art of buttercream, and this reflected in their creations. Their cake designs are elegant, original and eminently contemporary. “

It was so exciting to meet them and to be able to attend one of their classes here in the Philippines. There, I also met other cake enthusiasts who came from all over the Philippines to attend. It was such a great experience to be surrounded by women who share my passion for creative cakes! All in all it was an experience that will continue to inspire me in my cake making career!
Who are the women who inspires you? I read a quote that was posted on Instagram that says “ Girls compete with one another, Women EMPOWER each other.” …and I could not agree more!
